    Hi!

    Have Version 25.

I’m working on a project with BPAV files from an old EX-1 and other files.

I will be working with someone else non-networked and am bringing. Her a matching drive, EXCEPT I need to eliminate some “cards” and some files within cards.

There are no sequences yet. I want to make sure file names do not change (the file names are still what the camera generated and to avoid confusion later on, I’ll keep that rubric. Not sure in what ways this project will go back and forth.)

I plan to ingest selectively into a project we’ll both be using, so that all the source material in that project will reflect files we’re sharing (and not include files I’m excluding).

I think I’ll figure out a lot by trial and error, but just in case am popping questions here:

    1) Can I “media manage” without going through a sequence?

    2) any advice on what those outputted files should be, as they can’t be camera original anymore, correct? Because they’ll be partial cards? I’m a bit confused how to ask that question, so hoping someone will catch the gist.

    3) will I definitely be able to retain file names so that I can reconnect to camera originals way down the line?

If none of these questions make sense, and you have alternate advice on how to handle, also open to that.

    Hey Maria,

There are several PPro version 25 – I have decided to stay on 25.1, as I don’t want “Generative A.I.” to take over my projects.

My advice: DO NOT DELETE ANY FILES, OR PART OF FILES FROM YOUR ORIGINAL CAMERA MEDIA CARDS!
Sorry for shouting, but you need to make copies of your media, or copy the media that you want to work with on to a separate hard-drive. Never delete anything, unless the project is closed and will never return.

Are you Mac or PC based?

Version of PPro that you are using could be important if your colleague is not on the internet?

Make sure that you use your own name in project name and Sequence file name + add year-month-day to the front of it, that way you can share projects, and import timelines, without destroying what you’ve already edited – although that should not be possible, Adobe often works in mysterious ways.

Just a few quick thoughts on your questions, there are smarter people around here who will know better.

Thank you very much. I’m totally clear on all those fronts, but appreciate all the reminders.

    We are pre-edit.

It may help for me to add the workflow.

I am Mac and have all the original footage from 12 years ago. Redundancy galore. I have complete camera originals and know all about those.

She will be PC. I am making her an EXFAT files drive.

I can’t just copy the whole drive as some cards – and then more tricky because that wouldn’t be so hard, some files within cards – can’t go to her for various reasons.

I’m going to her for a week to teach her Premiere Pro and leave her with a drive, so she can browse footage herself and start some light sequencing/editing. I don’t need any advice on that part. This is solely a question about making a selective clone drive. But it may help to know some of that.

    Thank you!

    Hey Maria,

    Great – all good.

“Clone Drive” is just that, it is a clone, but that is not what you want to make.
Would be interesting to know how much data you are expecting to take across?
And, whether the reason for being selective is because some footage can not be shared with outsiders?

There are software packages out there that can help you copy files, but the ones I use is PC based.
I would suggest that by the time that you’ve got to that point of taking the selected files across, it might just be faster to use Finder (Mac) or Filemanager (PC).

Depending on your set-up and connectivity, maybe a shared cloud-service could work too – I am currently working on a 4K 700GB+ project where we are using Google Drive as shared storage, and local drives for editing. This is a low-budget project, but still more cost-effective than buying SSD drives to share around.

    Hi Maria,

You can use Project Manager. It is at the very bottom of the File menu. You can use Collect Files and Copy to a new location option. It will copy all your materials inside your project to a new location. So before starting this you may want to remove the materials you don’t want to be transferred from your Premiere project.

Thank you, Devrim. I actually did try that yesterday, and because I didn’t have a Sequence selected the option to Collect and Copy was grayed out. Thoughts?

Because just a few cards are an issue in actuality, for now, I’ve been thinking about just copying all the other cards over from camera originals, and then just figuring out creating some kind of substitute method – exporting QT files from the project – for the few files that are trapped in card folders I can’t share wholesale. But still curious if there is a more elegant way.

    Hey Maria,

Stupid question, but an Adobe App that is often overlooked is the Bridge Asset Manager, have you tried it?

Thanks, Mads, I’ll take a look at that. Good thing to learn anyways because yes, have totally ignored it.

Because of the low tech confidence of the other user, and unclear internet reliability, I’m staying away from cloud and server options for now….

Yes sequences needed. If you put the footage onto sequences, you can use it.

It would be helpfull to have the selected footage laid on to sequences and, they can start watching and selecting on the sequences immediately.

Yeah. That won’t work, and that was my suspicion. Thank you very much. I think I have made my way to a good solution, but appreciate these inputs.

But actually, this helps me come to a compromise solution where I will create sequences for just those tricky cards, project manage those, and give her those cards reduced in that way on her hard drive. So, thank you for keeping that in the picture.
