I have recently downloaded some free plug-ins, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out how to actually use the things. I put one in the plug-ins folder, but when I double-click it, I get a “file error: wrong type” error messasge in my FCP project.

After you install them into the HARD DRIVE>LIBRARY>APPLICATION SUPPORT>FINAL CUT PRO SYSTEM SUPPORT>PLUGINS folder, you then see them after you open FCP. They will be in the EFFECTS tab…organized however they choose to be. Finding them that way….well, you can go to that tab and press CMD-F and type in the name and that will find it.
