When working on a Premiere Pro project I primarily use my desktop but also synch the files on to my laptop so I can also work on the road. I have a very organized file structure but the problem is the Drive letter where the media is stored on both computers is different. Therefore, every time I synch the project to either the desktop or the laptop, the first time I open it, I need to direct Premiere to each and every folder that it needs (music, photos, video, etc) Is there a config file somewhere that can pre-populate the paths for Premiere? If not, any tips on managing this other than putting all content in one folder?

    Thanks!!!

You can assign a drive letter by right clicking on “Computer > manage > Disk management”. Right click on the drive and assign a letter that’s far in the alphabet so that it doesn’t conflict with any other current drive.

    Hey Vince…

I don’t know about Mac, but on PC I was curious….

Let’s say you create your media file structure on Drive X:

    then

You make Folder in Windows Documents for the project (typically C:) that contains an Alias/Shortcut to the folder Media Folder on the X: Drive…

Would premiere Pro see assets imported that shortcut as a C:/ Path or an X:/ path?

If C:/ path, then you could move the file structure to any drive and then retarget the alias and the media should still link, no?

Good question… and I’m not sure, something to try on that next project.

I did notice that Premiere CS5 is a lot better at dealing with relative folders than previous version.

Thanks Guys. I found a solution that works fine. since my laptop uses a C partition only I didnt want to rename anything. The folder where my project and media are stored is c:\video. The path my desktop recognizes is e:\video. I shared the video folder on my laptop and mapped a drive to \\mylaptop\video. The drive letter I used in the mapping was ‘E’ so now when I open my project on the laptop I am good to go and everything is recognized.
