  • Using multiple clips for each angle of a multi-clip?

Posted by Blase Theodore on October 25, 2006 at 5:06 pm

I have footage of a 12 hour event coming from 4 camera streams, each camera starting and finishing a tape randomly. I’d like to do a multiclip with the footage, but don’t know how I can group all of the tapes from each of the camera angles into a multi-clip. My manual shows how to deal with 4 individual clips from 4 different angles, but not groups of clips from 4 different angles.

Right now I have all the footage on the timeline properly sync’d up. Any one know what I can do to turn this into a multiclip?

    Thanks,
    Blase

Just to clarify, the truth is 2 of the 4 cameras were shot on HDV while the other 2 were shot on DV. I omitted this to keep the problem simple, and while this extra information could be ignored, if someone has an alternate workflow or workaround that takes this into account, thats even better.

    Thanks,

First, it doesn’t matter what the source footage format is,
as long as you capture it to the same format. So if you have HDV
and DV, I’d suggest capturing all at DV level. You can uprez after you do
    your roughcut.

Now, to make multiclips, you can do this two ways, from simultaneous
timecode on all the cameras, or from some a similar thing that happens
on all the cameras at the same time, like music or a flash or a voice,
whatever. You just mark that point on each camera and then group
the cameras, then make a multiclip. It’s all in the manual or help section.
Capture the footage the correct way first, that is to say, you mark
in and out points on each reel to create a batch list.Don’t ever capture by hitting “capture now”.
With each reel, in the log and capture window, enter the camera angle
in the angle box. This tells FCP how to put your muliclip together
when you get to that point. Then follow the directions on how to make
your multiclips. It works very well. Even better than AVID.
