  • using masks in 3D … or am i using the wrong blending mode?

    hi there

a friend has directed me to this fantastic forum, because i seem to have a question, nobody around me can answer.

I am trying to build a 3D comp, in which multiple small white solids are placed. Furthermore a red solid is rotating.

What i am looking for is a way to make the white solids become red, whenever they are “touched” by the red solid – BUT without seeing the red solid itself. Is there a chance to so so? I have tried multiple blending modes, some of which did what i wanted, but still left the red solid visible.

Masking does not seem to be an option for me, as i need a camera movement and the mask will only cut out in 2D.

If i am out of moderated status, i will try to post a little movie of what i did.

Hope i did not explain all that too complicated. Thanks for any hints you might be able to give me.

    Thomas

Not sure I completely understand the idea here… You have the white squares… and an invisible rotating red square? Which when it is in front of the white squares you wish to make the white squares red? but when it’s on the background you which to be invisible?

If I’ve got that right you can achieve it by making the white squares comp into a pre-comp then duplicating it and using it as an alpha matte for the red solid. If however you’re trying something different, a video or screen shot might be handy….

Only in after effects do children get to pick and whip their parents.

Have you tried enabling the preserve transparency switch on the red layer and moving it to the top of the timeline?I can’t check your video while I’m mobile, so I may have a different suggestion later 🙂
