Using layer mask after the cutout is done
My memory must be the worse. A few weeks ago I was searching for layer mask help in photoshop. I came across a video tutor that showed you how to use layer mask after the fact. Now I can’t find it and my memory is failing me.
If my memory serves me well, in the video a person cutout or removed an image. He realized after he cut it out there were some mistakes. And somehow he was able to use layer masks after he made the cutout to fix the image/mistakes. Again, he used the layer mask after the fact or when the cutout was already made. For the life of me, I can’t figure out or remember how it was done.
I know someone will want to tell me a better way than doing it after the fact, but please I really want to know how you fix mistakes with a layer mask after you made a cutout.
Hopefully I explained that well. If I did, I would appreciate your expert help and the steps involved.

Using the refine edge panel would be the place to start.
But if you learn what blacks , whites and gays mean on the mask then you can open the mask directly and use painting tools to modify it any way you want.
There are many tutorials.
But just remember the cutout maks if highly tunable just by paining on it with whites, blacks and grays .Adrian D\’Alessio aka; Fluxstringer

Sorry just a bit unclear, did he cut out the image with a layer mask or by, say, using the eraser. If you’ve just erased out parts of an image I’m pretty the only way to get it back is by using the “undo” button.
If he was using a layer mask then just click on the mask in the layers panel and use a white brush to paint back in and a black brush to paint image out.

IF you simply want to avoid having to redo the cutout AND you still have the original intact image, you can copy the selection area into the original and convert it to a layer mask, after which you can edit the selection as you described.
A couple of ways to copy it over, for instance selecting the transparent areas of the layer by control-clicking on the layer thumbnail in the layer palette, then saving selection to an alpha channel. Then you can copy that alpha channel to a new alpha channel in your original image file, load it as selection and turn it into a layer mask.
