Dear friends,

I have a recorded conversation between two people, where Person A is much farther from the mic than Person B, and I’d like to use something like the Leveler filter in iZotope to equalize the volumes to be at a similar level. The recording continues for over 3 hours.

I was playing with Leveler, but this filter creates an audio ramp in which we can hear the volume shift up and down between the people, and instead I’d like a cliff.

Do you know the right current product, preferably in iZotope, but in Audition if necessary, to accomplish this?

    Thank you,

    David

I use Waves Vocal Rider for leveling in Pro Tools. It has a slow and fast mode. I usually use slow, but fast might be better for your need. If there’s noise under the voices, try one of iZotope’s noise reduction modules. Dialog Isolate is very good. Hearing the noise go up & down makes the leveling more noticeable. Removing the noise might help.

I use this plugin. its crystal clear and doesn’t color the audio at all and its free! now obviously if you’re raising volume, you’re also going to raise the noise floor too, so you may need to use noise reduction.
