  • Using IN and OUT points with Sony Vegas 7

    Hello,
I am new around here, so let me say that I am quite exited about being part of this forum.

Anyway, I have just started editing with Sony Vegas 7 and I have a question about IN and OUT points.
Most of my experience editing video is with Avid, and I am therefore used to splicing and overwriting using IN and OUT points. I am however having a lot of trouble editing with Vegas, since IN and OUT points do not seem to be available… Is this correct?

For example, I was just trying to get rid of a two second space without video in the middle of a long sequence. I tried to just delete that part of the timeline in order to make all the clips come together. In the Avid I would have just set the in point at the end of the clip before the empty space, and the out point before the clip right after the empty space.
With Vegas I couldn’t figure out how to do this, so I needed to move the whole sequence of clips using the selection edit tool, which is more complicated and riskier. I know that I could have moved the clips one by one, but this would have been extremely lengthy and just not smart.
Isn’t there a way to delete a certain part of the timeline?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

Take a look in the help file under the topic of Ripple edit. Ripple edit has several settings that allow for you to do what you did by just simply removing the media- it will move all remaining items over to cover the gap you just made. There is a button for it right up there with the selection tool button. Make sure you remember to turn it off once you are done or you may wind up with stuff where you don’t really want it. 🙂

You can also select a group of events on the timeline and press the “g” buton on your keyboard to group them together so that you do not have to keep selecting and deselecting items (you can also group individual events on different parts of the timeline if need be).

Thanks so much for replying, j razz!
I found the Ripple edit option and it does help. It is similar to the AVID’s splice in option. However, I am still having trouble with the issue that I mentioned in my first post.
I tried grouping the clips, but it didn’t work for me.

Now I am experimenting with a smaller sequence with just a few clips and some spaces in between each clip without any video.
I select the clips that I want to group with the Selection Edit tool. Then I go to Edit / Group / Create New… but nothing happens. I also tried the shortcut “G” after selecting the clips, but still nothing.
Like I said, with Avid you can just set your in and out points on the actual timeline and then delete the selected space of the actual timeline. The clips come together easily.

I would like to avoid selecting clips because once the timeline is longer, and there are various audio and video channels, it can be risky to be moving them around. I just would like to remove the empty spaces on the actual timeline without touching the clips.
Is this possible? Are there any alternatives? Can sections of the timeline just be deleted?
    Thanks so much!!!

I am not infrongt of my editing unit at the moment but I believe gthat you can double clkick in the empty space which will select it and the hit delete. I believe that if ripple editing is turned on that all the subsequent events (Vegas’s name for clips) will move as a unit to close up that empty space. I believe that gthere are scripts available that with one action you can close all empty spaces on the time line.

    Thanks so much, Terry!
I tried that and it worked perfectly!
I just have one more little question.
When the ripple editing is turned on all the subsequent events move as a unit to close up that empty space. But what about events located on other tracks (video and audio tracks)?
How can I get those events to also move as a unit to close up an empty space left on another track?
I know that on Avid you just need to select those tracks. How do you do that with Sony Vegas?
    THANKS SO MUCH!!!

Use edit>Select all then hit G (Group). Then double click the empty space and delete it. All events on all lines will move equally.

Instead of that, click the drop down arrow beside the “ripple” button on the toolbar and change the mode to affect ALL tracks/markers/etc… instead of only affected tracks.

Thanks a lot, Edward and Terry!
I tried both things and both worked perfectly. It is good to be aware of more than one way to get something done.
I truly appreciate your feedback. I have actually gone from almost quitting on Vegas to actually enjoy using it.
    Thanks again and best regards,

    Jorge
