We’re shooting dv footage with a PD-170 to this hard drive. When we import it into Premiere and put it on the timeline the red render bar pops up. They seem to be standard dv files – why would they need to be rendered?

Check the specs of your footage, and I’ll bet the audio is not set for 48K. Many DV Camcorders default to 32K audio (12 bit) not 48K audio (16 bit).

The important thing to remember is that ONLY 48K audio is locked to video. You should use 48K session settings for DVD Creation, as well.

Change the setting in your camera to 48 or 16 bit, and then your render bar should go away, (Assumeing that you session is set for 48K audio!)

    Forgot something:
You will find out that your existing 32k recorded footage will forever have the render bar over it. Just render it to get the project done, and then change camera settings to 48K, and subsequent footage will be ok.

Well so far this is what I’ve found out – the HVR-DR60 appears to record dv files as AVI type 1, and Premiere prefers AVI type 2 files. You can use type 1 but they have to be rendered. I haven’t found a utility yet that can batch convert from one type to the other with audio.
