  • Using HDV Clips Captured With Final Cut Pro 7?

Posted by Ian Brown on May 23, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Using Vegas Pro 10 I tried to import some HDV clips I had previously captured with Final Cut Pro 7, but only the audio appeared.

It seems that Vegas can only recognise the audio part of the clips.

Is there any way to get the video to be recognised other than by recapturing them in Vegas?

    Normal DV-PAL works perfectly.

I assume it is a QT incompatibility.

It depends on what’s in the QuickTime file. I would say never capture footage with FCP that you plan to edit in Vegas. Always capture the native footage in Vegas so that FCP doesn’t transcode it.

Open the file in QuickTime and use the Inspector (Ctrl+I) to see what codec it uses. If it’s HDV/MPEG-2 this is probably why Vegas won’t read it. Vegas expects HDV to be in an MPEG2 M2T file and not a QuickTime MOV container.

Thanks for the quick reply John.

This is what the QT Inspector says about the file:-

    Apple HDV 1080i50, 1440 x 1080 Apple HDV 1080i50, 1440 x 1080

Is there anything I can convert it to in order to make it compatible using something like Streamclip as it’s not possible to recapture at the moment?

Yea, that’s what I was afraid of. Vegas is not expecting HDV in a QuickTime container.

It looks like that’s your only choice. Streamclip might be able to convert it. You could also download the trial of CineForm NeoScene and see if that will convert the files to CineForm. Finally, you may be able to convert them to Avid DNxHD with QuickTime Pro or maybe even Streamclip (I’ve never tried). You can download the DNxHD codec from the Avid web site for free.

    Thanks John.

I will try your suggestions but I suspect the best one will turn out to be recapturing!
