  • using GIF for 16:9 overlay

    Hi all,

I’m putting a gif as a letterbox overlay on my uppermost track in FCP. The trouble is, its reading the transparent middle as white–blocking out all the video!

Anyone know how to fix this??

Fix #1: Make the letterbox in Photoshop. Make it on one layer with a clear center. Save it as a Photoshop file or a TIFF and import that. The transparency will be preserved.

Fix #2: Create black rectangles from the same pull-down menu where you get color bars from. Put two on the screen to make your bars.

Fix #3: Drag a “Luma Key” from the effects panel onto your gif. Adjust the settings so that it’s keying out “brighter” and drag the sliders around until it looks good. (This one is easiest but may not be the cleanest…but go ahead and try it first, though.)

Luma key was easiest and seemed to work the best. Great advice….thanks!

TUnder the modify menu there is a menu item Alpa type. the re are 4 choices none/ignore, strait, white, black. Select white and turn off the luma key and see if that helps. FCP is bad at guessing alpha channels so you have to tell it what to look for.

Fix #4: The Widescreen filter. I think it’s under Mattes in the Video Effects menu. Adjust the aspect ratio to create black bars at top & bottom as desired.
Fix #5: The 4 Point Garbage Matte- also under Mattes, I believe. Adjust the points of the matte to cut off the top and bottom as desired.
Fix #6 (and one of my favorites!): In a track above the video being matted, add a layer of Slug, or better still a Color Matte (both in the Generators in the Viewer), & then apply a Garbage Matte to that layer & click the “Invert” box in the GM filter. Using a color matte let’s you pick the color of the letterbox (as you can with a GIF, TIFF, etc).
