  • Using Final Cut Pro X with Motion 5 for Keying

Posted by Mark Eskey on August 22, 2011 at 7:07 pm

I am using Motion 5 to get a great key on some footage because the results are far better than though Final Cut Pro x’s keyer. Is there a way that I can work through Final Cut Pro X to apply my keys in Motion 5 or do I need to do all of my keys in motion then render and export all footage back into Final Cut Pro X which is a real hassle? Thanks.

Yes. No direct link from motion to fcpx.

That is what I thought. Thank you very much for your response.

There is a Keyer in the FCP X effects browser. I don’t have Motion 5 but it looks like it is the same one pictured on Apple’s Motion web page. Even if it is not, I think it does a pretty good job, at least for stand-in comps.

Based on what I see in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rSnqR1bs7s

FCP X and Motion 5 have the same basic Keyer but FCP lacks the Advanced options.

Thanks for your responses. Unfortunately the keyer in FCPX is a really scaled back version compared to motion 5’s keyer. There are many advanced options that can make the difference between a half decent key and a really great key. I guess I will just use motion and export it back to FCPX.

    Try
File>Publish Template. I was able to take a logo I made and bring it right into FCPX. Although it counted as a generator so I’m not sure if this is what you want to do, if you have a bunch of clips or not. Although it may help if it is just one.
