  • Using Final Cut Pro 5 in a semi live studio enviroment?

Just curious if there is a workflow in a multicam live studio enviroment that FCP5 with a capture card and using multicam would work? Ive heard stories of Nascar and the Super Bowl were doing somthing like this for spots during the telecast. basically we have a daily show we are doing, we shoot the host wraps and various interviews in a studio and then edit different segment packages on a FCP system then dig in the tapes from the studio and sync up the camera angles, cut the “live” segments, then everything is assemebled together, including tons of lower thirds, graphics..filters, ect…..we cant get this done in an 8 hour shift……:) so….back to my original question, could you:

    A) Have a FCP5 system set up that takes 2-3 component signals at the same time??? (never seen or heard of it done, but Im listening). And use the multicam function to do a line cut live?

The other option of course is just do it with a hardware switcher and ingest the linecut from that into FCP5…., any ways you can think of to speed of this process would be extremely helpful, thanks…

FCP cannot capture more than one camera at a time. Your best workflow would be to switch your show live to tape and directly into FCP.

I work on a weekly show with three cameras. Program out gets recorded to Betacam SP, SONY DSRDR1000 and Capture Now in FCP. Wide shot camera gets iso recorded to another DSRDR1000. Graphics, lower thirds and video gets added after taping. 30 minute show takes less thas 3 hours .

    Paul,

If you had a shared storage environment (FCP& X-SAN) with at least three FCP systems, you could digitize three “streams” concurrently on three separate systems. You would then access all of this media from a single system and proceed with your edit.

If you don’t want to spring for the connectivity, then you could still record to three separate systems and then file transfer to one for finishing.

Anyway you look at it, a line cut would speed things along the fastest.

PS. There is software that enables you to “break off” a live feed and begin editing. So, you wouldn’t have to wait for the end of the session to begin your edit.

I was reading this thread when I remembered there’s a way to finish a 30 minute show in 30 minutes. I’m not trying to be a Luddite, but does anyone cut shows live to tape any more? I used to work in a studio and recorded too many shows to count, and it’s the most efficient way there is. Maybe it’s not the most flexible, but you can always iso the wide shot or all the cameras. I guess it depends on how “perfect” you need the finished product to be. With the right switcher I suppose you could digitize to NLE as you lay the show to tape as well.
