I’ve just learned my new Vegas editing machine is going to be a Mac with 2 quad core processors. I’ll be running Windows XP with Boot Camp, possibly VMware or Fusion (although they don’t support Firewire) and I’m trying to figure the best way to configure the three drives the machine will have. I’ve always used NTFS drives with my PCs, but if the drive is FAT32, you can access the same files from both OS X and Windows. With NTFS, you can’t. I’m aware of the 4 GB file limit with FAT32, but my question is whether there are any other issues with using FAT32 drives with Vegas.

    Are they slower?

If you do try to capture, render or copy a file larger than 4 GB, does it automatically cut it into pieces?

My impulse now is to have 2 NTFS drives and one FAT32 drive in the machine to maintain maximum flexibility. Are there any issues with doing that?

    Thanks for your thoughts,

    Look into MacDrive7 (google it).
I’ve been using Vegas on bootcamp on Macpro laptop. It works.
With MacDrive7 you can address PC drives (can be NTSF), on the Mac.

    Wow John! Thanks so much.

I’ve got a situation similar to Mary’s, possibly getting a new MAC Book Pro and using Boot Camp/XP so I can use my Vegas. I was wondering the very same thing. needing one drive accessable to both MAC and XP so I don’t have to duplicate every video and photo file.

    thanks

I’ll give another big thumbs up to MacDrive.
I work periodically with a guy who records footage to a hard drive using FCP.
At the end of the shoot, he hands me a (Mac formatted) drive with all the material on it.
I plug it into my PC and up comes the footage, ready for import into Vegas 🙂
