using extend edit effectively

Well you don’t have to have a transition selected. Just the end of a clip or a cut. Use the G tool to grab a group of them and extend them all to the same point for example. Used in combination with snapping and it’s extremely effective. It can also duplicate the function of the roll tool. For example, highlight the cut point and you can extend it with the extend edit function instead of switching to the roll tool. And no, I don’t think it utilizes the autoselect tools in any way.

Isn’t that the same thing? The end of a cut is a “transition” it’s a cut to black…right? 🙂

Good information, I didn’t know you could do it with multiple clips. I used extend edit all the time on AVID, but FCP’s works totally different…so I’m trying to figure out how to use it.

I used to do Avid and it pretty much functioned the same way for me. At least I used it the same way. And no, I don’t ever call the end of a clip a transition. In my mind at least, a cut is a cut. A transition is any other way of getting from A to B. Final cut calls it an edit. Start on edit, end on edit, etc. And extend edit of course.

I guess it’s semantics…but I consider a transition a change from one thing to another…a pan or zoom is a visual transition…a cut is an edit transition…like a dissolve…just my opinion.

So if you used extend edit in AVID, then you would not need to select a “cut”…you’d just have the track selection on. But that is not how FCP works…you have to actually select the edit to extend it.
