  • Using Compressor for 4:3 DVX 24p -> DVCPROHD 720P

    Hello Y’all

    I’m testing Compressor to convert footage shot on DVX-100A at 24P Advanced Pulldown in 4:3 mode (long story) to DVCPRO HD 720P resolution/codec. I’ve finally gotten all the aspect ratio vs. pixel aspect ratio and crop values worked out, but now the timecode is off. Basically, it’s a 23.98 vs. 29.97 timecode values problem from the Advanced Pulldown conversion where if, say, a clip starts on frame 15 in the embedded timecode count (eg. 23:58:56:15), it’s actually frame 12 of a 24fps timecode base.

    The workaround that I’ve found to work is to use QT Player to cut the first X frames off so that the clip begins at the next 00 frame, eg. 23:58:57:00. Unfortunately, that will require lots of manual labor (and temp drive space) that renders that pipeline moot since the whole point of using Compressor was to save time and batch through hundreds of clips quickly. Any suggestions on how to get this to work inside Compressor?

    I’m not sure if I understand what you doing but you could try capturing the 24pA as 29.97 and removing the advanced pulldown from the 720p footage after you go through compressor.

    or maybe you could use media manager to recompress the footage?
