  • Using Capture now with Decklink HD and Xserve RAID

    Hi!

Feel that I have read about this earlier but have searched through the forums without finding any good explanations…

I have a setup with a G5 2.5Ghz, 4GB ram, 10.3.8, FCP 4.5 and Decklink 4.8. I am using a 5.6TB Xserve RAID for storage. Everything is running fine and the xserve raid has no trouble capturing or playing back 10 bit 1080 HD material BUT trouble is capture. I only have a HDCAM camera available and no deck so I have to use capture now. And of course, even though I have tried to limit capture now to everything between 2 and 5 minutes, the moment I press capture now it takes about 60-90 seconds before it starts due to the “allocating disc space message that appers” and when I press esc to stop it, it takes 30-60 seconds before it manages to end the capture. Sure, use a deck is the best solution cause that works.. but anyone have any solutions or good ideas for getting around this? Might it help with 4.7.1 and 10.3.7 maybe? Anyone getting it to work properly?

    Cheers,
    LP

I’ve got more or less the same system, however I’m doing 10bit SD.

With capture now it has to allocate the disk space so that FCP can write the info into a predefined area. I get a delay of about 10seconds before capturing – HD would have larger file sizes and therefore take longer. likewise after capture. With capturing from a deck, I would imagine it takes the disk space calculation from the in & out.
Thats my basic knowledge of problem.

Also capture now can lead to problems when you come to slomo.

I’m using 10.3.8 so it still happens!

We used to have the same problem on our CineWave. Might be a FCP problem.

    Lars,

I just experienced a similar situation. I’m using G5 Dual 2.5 / OS X 10.3.8 / Decklink HD and I tried upgrading from v4.6 to v4.8 yesterday. When trying to capture 720p HD footage with either L&C or Batch Capture in FCP HD, it gave me the message that there was no video present and the system was waiting for timecode. Interestingly the deck was still controllable. I went back to v4.6 and all was fine.

    Good luck…

    Matt

Recording 720P on our DL HD card runs like a dream, even with the new drivers. (from Varicam/1700 with L&C and Batch Capture)
