Using Avid component I/O cable for Mojo to capture from DVCam edit tapes

You’ll need to convert the audio to an RCA (unbalanced?) connection. There are boxes made by blackbox among others. The time code comes in through an RS-422 converter (Rosetta Stone comes to mind, but there are others) plugged into the serial port.

It looks like we are going to get a Keyspan USB to serial converter and a RS-422 deck control cable to bring in the timecode. So that should take care of the time code.

In terms of the audio, is there any quality difference coming in analogue via RCA versus digital 48k via Firewire? Also, if we need to bring in audio from BWFs the portion of the dialogue that didn’t make it to D5 because of film rolled out, or plain old wild sound, do we need to do anything to the audio files to change the sampling rate?

I’ve not used BWF’s before, but I recall somewhere there being a post about them and timecode issues – maybe it was the broadcast forum? From what I understand, TC should come in with the file… Try searching the COW and see what comes up.

As far as quality, I’ve not noticed a difference. It’s always been a huge knock on MOJO, but I honestly cannot tell the difference. At the end of the show, when you’ve got music from CD’s and nat sound from tape, I just dont hear it. Then again, maybe I’ve burned out my ears with my Strat and a Marshall loud enough to polish my boots… The biggest problem I’ve had with audio are the line converters. We’ve continually used old equipment lying around, and I think I’ve burned through 3 since installing that particular Avid. Oh, and if you are using materiel with different sample rates, make sure you set the Avid to transcode on import (settings / audio project). It eliminates some of those “WHAT THE…” moments when your done and trying to get it out!

Thank you, Jon. It looks like we need to add a Mackie board to our pile of equipment as well. I truly miss my days with Firewire I/O.
