Using AVI files
Is there a way that I can take in AVI files and use them (or convert them for use) in FCP?

Take a look at flip4mac. I think it allows you to use avi files within Quicktime apps.

Flip4Mac has an export component that allows you to convert WMV files to QuickTime. They also have a player component which will allow you to import WMV files into FCP.
