Using AVI files
I have a large number of video captures – these are all PAL DV, normally 720×576.
I am doing a fair bit of pre-processing …. de-interlacing,squaring pixels, resizing, stabilization, level conversion etc. using Avisynth & Virtual dub.
These are excellent tools but it does mean that the output will be in avi container.There are advocates of different ways to proceed, but the main options seem to be X264vfw or HQX.
I have done a little plying around to make sure these can go on timeline OK, and so far seem fine.Anybody have any experience over which format would be better as my input media?
Output for these current projects will be ‘Rendered as’ SONY AVC/ACC for loading onto Vimeo or Youtube, in 720p or 1080p progressive.

I would use Motion-JPEG which is used by lots of content houses to deliver high quality royalty free content. You can also use Lagarith. It will have large file sizes but it is 100% lossless.
I would avoid X264vfw like the plague. AVC/H.264 was never meant to be placed in an AVI container and while you can do it… it’s a hack at best and Vegas Pro will give you problems when you go to render. So your entire project will look like its working and then at the 11th hour when you need to render, all sorts of weird things will happen. Don’t do it.
