  • Using arrow key to move in small increments

    Posted by Lisa Howden on May 7, 2009 at 7:43 pm

    Greetings all,

    Please forgive my ignorance, I’ve just moved over from Quark and I’m trying to get a handle on some of the basic commands.

    In Quark, if you hold down the alt key while using the arrow key it will allow you to move in smaller increments.

    Is there a way to do this in Indesign?

    Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    shift + arrow = 10x
    arrow = x
    cmd(mac) + shift + arrow = 1/10x

    Since you said “alt”, I assume you are on PC. Maybe try “ctrl” instead of “cmd”.

    Also in your Indy Preferences (Unit & Increment), you can specify the “X” amount that an arrow press will move an object. (Keyboard Increments > Cursor Key:) The default is 1 point (~0.0139in).

    One more thing, since you are moving from Quark, check out this link

    https://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1323250

    Its an excerpt from a book about transitioning from Quark to Indy. Should provide some helpful insight.

    Thanks for the article – it was like reading my mail. I think I’ve worked passed being “frustrated”.

    Anyway, I really appreciate your help.
