  • Using an audio EDL to recover a timeline

Hi, it’s been awhile since I’ve had to post a question up here, but I’m pulling my hair out and you guys always come through :o)

I have a bunch of audio only EDLs for a series made by the company I work at back in 2000. Over 5 years before I started, so I have know idea why the only record kept of the series was the edl used for the dub (and the masters)… I now need to do some work on this series, and so I was hoping I could use the edls to help me find the video. I’ve done something like this before where I had a timeline that only had video references on and I went through clip by clip pressing f to match frame and f10 to drop the video back into the sequence with the audio tracks. I can’t seem to work out how to do this the other way around though. Any ideas for how to get video track references that I can then go through and capture?

Hope that’s clear, any thoughts at all greatly appreciated!

Maybe go through the EDL in a text editor, and add the video to the list? It’s been a long time since I manipulated an EDL, but seems to me it’s just a matter of adding a V to each edit… right? or something just as easy… 2 v’s? LOL? I just can’t remember exactly but it’s not that hard to do I’ll wager.

Then import that new EDL and batch capture it.

The best EDL manipulation software I ever used was Shotlister by Digiteyes, an Australian company. It ran on a Win machine (everything from Win3.1 to the latest and also under WINE in Linux) It converted an EDL into a column based graphica interface. You could copy an audio track to a video track and then create a new EDL which had audio edits mapped to video.

The company is no more but I know the principal and just a few weeks ago I suggested he post a free version of the software up for just this sort of thing. An alternative would be to contact me directly and I could run your EDLs through and map the video track to make a new EDL.

Thanks for your help guys! I actually kept fiddling after posting this, and remembered that you can turn off “use clip settings” when capturing, so I used that to pull in all the clip data and then went through pressing ‘f’ and then ‘f10’.
