i searched the archives on this and still couldnt resolve my problem. hopefully someone can help me out. i have a very simple animation. im using a plane and having it deform along a circle spline using the path deformer plug-in. there are no background scenes and i have checked Alpha Channel and Straight Alpha in render settings.

When i import this rendered movie into after effects and place it above another video, the bottom video does not show through. I tried going into the Interpret Footage menu for my cinema 4d animation in after effects, but the alpha section is all grayed out.

    I appreciate any help!

i just realized what i was doing wrong. i was saving the file as an AVI. i am assuming an AVI does not support alpha channels. i saved the file as a quicktime and everything worked.

    hope this helps someone else.

It depends on your codec. This is a very common question in the AE COW. The animation codec in QT supports an alpha channel. In AE the render module defaults to animation codec with RGB+Alpha Millions of colors+ which will give you an alpha, but there are many codecs(most?) that don’t. So it’s not just a matter of it being QT, but which codec and what settings you use for it.
