Using a Xena card for Avid, crazy idea?
This may be a crazy idea, but for all the Avid Xpress Pro users out there that are trying to figure out how to bring in dnxhd footage without an Adrenaline HD board, this may be an option for you. I believe you could buy a Xena card for your Avid Xpress Pro PC, download the avid dnxhd quicktime codec for free from avid and use AJA VTR Exchange to capture HD footage to the avid dnxhd codec. You could then import the quicktimes into Avid xpress pro and work from there. Now I don’t have a Xena card so I have no way of testing this, but we have an Adrenaline and xpress pro and we have taken dnxhd quicktime files, exported from after effects, and imported them with no problem into xpress pro and the adrenaline. The only catch is that you would only be able to work with the 8bit codec, not the 10bit codec. However if this does work, then it could be a much more affordable solution for HD work if you are already using Xpress Pro and can’t afford to buy and Adrenaline (which even if you can afford an Adrenaline, don’t waste your money). This was just a thought I had and I have no idea if it will actually work but I was hoping someone on this forum might be able to test it out. Possibly Bob Z?
Enjoy,
Jeremy Newmark
P.S. – If it does work, let’s just hope avid doesn’t pull the codec from their site.
