  • Using a soft box VS. paper based filters?

Posted by Rick Pearl on June 17, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Is there any real value for any kind of lighting setup to using a paper based filter VS. a soft box? OR is the paper based filter just an inexpensive alternate?

    Thanks.

    Ummmm yeah… what’s a paper filter?

Softboxes are the way to go for nice soft “indirect look” lighting. If you are on a budget, the boxes made by Photoflex are a more affordable alternative to Chimeras.

Even cheaper (and faster setup and strike, too), are umbrellas. There’s way more spill and aren’t as controllable as softboxes… but they still give a nice soft look and you can pop ’em up and down in five seconds, which gives them a bit of an advantage over softboxes in “run n gun” type situations.

[Todd at Fantastic Plastic] “what’s a paper filter?”

You turn on the fixture, and in about five minutes it starts giving a very authentic “bonfire” effect — wait, gotta go, I have a problem here!
