  • Using a server with multiple Final Cut users (NB: not a “Final Cut Server” question)

    Hi,

I apologize if this has been covered, but every time I search “Final Cut” and “server”, I only find topics on “Final Cut Server”. I have a more general question. I need to set up a server (I hope to use an old G5 tower) that will store off-line footage for two editors, who will be cutting simultaneously. What is the best way to go about this?

For example, if there is one copy of each clip on the server, will both editors be able to access it? I assume they will have to have separate projects, but I just want to make sure they can both access the same clip at the same time, and even put different in/outs on it.

Any common pitfalls that I should avoid when setting this up? What is the best (fastest) way to connect the server to the editing stations — firewire? Ethernet cables?

    Thanks very much!
    John

Yes you can share out a disk via the ethernet connection. Has the G5 only got one ethernet connection? I forget. You will need a GigE router or another ethernet card in a spare slot. You are going to need some good storage attached though.

We do this all the time with Intel machines in SD for broadcast so it should work for offline material with a G5.

You want a Shared Area Network. Search the cow for that.

Or maybe a Storage Area Network, which is what I think you meant to say. Though actually Network Attached Storage would be a better solution in this case. You won’t need the G5. Basically it’s a box of discs that you attach to a network. Amazon has pages of them.

Last time I looked, NAS setups were not recommended by Apple. My NAS shared Drobo certainly isn’t up to editing.

    Hi
The Intel range of gigabit Ethernet PCI-X cards – MT1000 (or GT1000) 2/4 port etc (which are sometimes very cheap on eBay) – install without additional drivers in OS X Leopard, giving an old G5 jumbo frames multi-port capability. I too was thinking of setting up a server using the Intel card I’ve fitted, with an 8 port Sonnet eSata card (for SD editing) – but I still need to get a round tuit 😉
