Okay I need to matte out all but a jigsaw puzzle piece shaped part of a video clip. Then I need to bring that video clip into a motion and key out everything but the video inside the puzzle piece.

What I tried was a two step process. First I made a puzzle piece shaped matte in photoshop. Then I place the puzzle shaped matte over my video clip so ever thing but the puzzle shaped center was black… I exported my FCP sequence as a quicktime file… then imported the quicktime file into motion and keyed out the black…
Now the only problem with this process (apart not really being a two step process like I said) is that I’m having a really difficult time keying out all the black without loosing part of my vidoe… I don’t want to use green because there is a lot of green in my video… I tried using pink but that worked even worse then black…

So what I want to know is… what is a better way of doing this… can I export a quicktime file with an imbeded alpha channel? if so, how do i do that? Also will converting my photoshop file to “NTSC colors” help

Import your puzzle piece and your video clip into Motion.

Place the Puzzle piece on top the video in a composition.

Select the Puzzle Piece in the Layers tab of Motion.

Then select Object > Blend Mode > Stencil Luma.

This assumes the puzzle piece itself is white and the background is black.
