You need to uprade only the program: project files (these are no EDLs) from version 5.1 are not compatible with older versions.

You need to upgrade the OS and upgrade to the universal version of FCP.

You need to buy the upgrade to 5.1, it’s not free or automatic, only the update to 5.1.2 will be free.
But I suppose you’ll need the newer OS anyway, I don’t think it works with 10.3.

I have FCP 5.04, so I need to purchase 5.1 universal upgrade via the turn in program and that will work.

You should upgrade, but you can export an XML in the meantime.
