  • Using 1080i footage on 480i sequence

    Greetings.

I’m having a bit of a problem. I’m currently doing a video that’s basically a visual recap of the work done in the last 5 years by this state’s governor, so I’m using video from all kind of sources from regular DV to 1080p. The sequence is in final cut pro using regular NTSC DV preset, since it will be output to a DVD to be shown on a projection screen and handed out to people.

However I’m having a problem with using 1080i footage, if I slow it down (usually to 50%), then I get some bad interlace flicker on the image.

When I place the footage, the “Shift fields” filter is applies automatically, but I’ve tried it with it on and off, using de interlace and the flicker filter plugins to no avail.

Any help? Redoing the video on a 1080i sequence isn’t an option since about 90% of the source is on NTSC DV.

If You don`t have HUGE amount of that 1080i material I would suggest You to down convert all of it to ntsc in Compressor, and then bring it to FCP for editing.

This is a little late, but just to let you all know that I found a way around it, so that anyone with the same problem can try it.

Basically I had a lot of 1080i footage mixed in, some of it digitized as very long shots (it was a 15 minute video to show the work done by the local governor in his 5 years in office), so it wasn’t very practical to convert all to ntsc and then edit it again in the time I had left.

However, I found out a simmilar result can be achieved by creating a new sequence, placing the video on that sequence with the shift fields filter set to +1, and no speed change (the flickering showed up when the footage was slown down, I just copy-paste, remove speed and then moved the in and out points a little bit), render it, then go back to the original sequence and replace the 1080i footage with the sequence, and apply the speed change to the sequence. After that, no more flickering.
