  • Using 1080 footage in a 720 project to zoom

    Hey guys,

I’ve been searching for an answer to this but have not found one yet. I’m editing a project in FCP 7 using a 1280×720 sequence setting in Apple Pro Res. One of the cameras I shot the project on gave me a source video of 1920×1080. Normally I’ve been resizing them to 720 so that everything is consistent, but one shot has detail that I’d like to focus on by putting the 1080 video in and just having it cropped to 720, therefore zooming without quality degradation.

Problem is when I import the video it conforms to the 720 wireframe in the canvas. When I drag the corners out it appears to be digitally zooming with severe degradation. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Somewhere in settings, there is a check box for something like Scale Items to Sequence.

For certain short docs I shoot 1080 then edit on a 720 sequence, scaling and adding zooms to many shots for an enhanced active style. It can be a great additional tool to bring an extra level of energy to a piece.
