Vegas works completely different than any Avid product so do yourself a favour and forget everything that you used to do.

The Trimmer is what comes up when you select the “open in trimming window” option.
You can play your footage and drop markers (shortcut is the M key) on it if you want to.
If you want to select a specific piece of footage, drag the cursor to highlight the portion or double-click between a set of markers, right-click it and drag it to the timeline.
Once there, you’ll have several options and it’s a matter of choosing the appropriate one.
A lot of us, me included, rarely use the Trimmer and do all our cutting right on the timeline.

BTW #1, the online help files in Vegas are very good and I encourage you to spend some time going through the various tutorials.
BTW #2, the S key (for Split) is the equivalent to the razor blade.

thanks. I got the S key down.
I had to go to vegas from avid liquid because there was no mxf plugin for avid liquid, plus they are no longer supporting the project.
The thing about editing on the timeline, which i do make adjustments, is the fact that if I want to add a short take in between two other cuts, I usually spend alot of time moving stuff to the right,a nd also plugging back and forth as my clip drops to the far right of the timeline.
however it seems stable and works well for the price.

Look into the Auto Ripple tool as it’ll make doing this MUCH easier.
Be advised that the usual recommendation is to enable it, do what you have to do and then disable it again.
This is because it’s easy to forget that it’s enabled and then run into problems later because you forgot it was on.
