  • Use Warp Stabilizer based on background

While Warp Stabilizer usually does an excellent job, it is clearly biased toward stabilizing the foreground objects in the frame. I need to smooth a wobbly shot based on the background instead of the foreground. (Imagine a handheld panning shot of a graduate walking down an aisle toward the stage.)

There is an excellent tutorial on Adobe’s site, but it assumes a greenscreen background with markers. I have tried masking the foreground object (person) but then WS trys to track the mask.

Ideally, I’d like to stabilize the shot based on the panned background, ignoring the moving foreground person. Any suggestions?

Precompose the Footage after masking the FG object. Then use WS on Precomp where there is no Mask.

    Vishesh,

Thanks for the idea. That seems to work OK.

How do I now ‘link’ the stabilized footage to the original footage without the mask? WS doesn’t seem to generate any position keyframes, so there is nothing to which to parent the unmasked footage.

Oops, I guess I could just delete the masks after WS. 😉
