Use Expression to Define “Take Matte From Layer” with “Set Matte” Effect
I have a bunch of shape objects that have text appear within them. The animation is all expression based and I can duplicate them with ease, but I have to change the set matte for each one.
I thought it would be cool if I could do an index+1 like I’m doing with everything else, so I can keep copying and pasting without having to do any additional customization. Is this possible? I noticed that there is no stopwatch for this attribute within the effect.

Not possible with expressions, they can only act as a calculation in lieu of, or on top of, keyframes.
Non keyframeable parameter -> no expressions ☹but since you mention they all link to a specific layer right next to it, not all to the same layer, are track mattes not an option ?

I want the shape visible and the text animating only within that shape. Not sure if that’s something trackmattes can do. I’ll play around with it.

if you duplicate with Ctrl+D – you won’t lose your matte option. copy paste unfortunately resets the matte option to default.
