  • Use DVD player and tv for preview monitor?

I am the creative director at a small church (with a small budget) and I need a way to accurately preview my videos. I am working in after effects 7 and premiere pro 2. I know I can use the firewire out to my camera then composite out from there to a tv (we can’t afford a broadcast monitor yet), but does that produce any wear and tear on my camera (dvx100b)? What I’m really wanting to know is if I can use a panasonic DVD/VHS player (I don’t have it with me so I don’t have the model number and can’t just hook it up and test it) with a firewire in port in place of the camera (also can’t afford a DV deck) to preview the video?

    Thanks in advance,
    Brent

There’s no wear and tear on the camera, as long as you don’t wiggle the little firewire connector too much, since it’s weak. Maybe duct tape the two together. Hey, low budget. Or get a Manfrotto clamp or something to make sure nothing moves. Other than that, there’s no wear and tear on the transport since it’s not running. Unless you have to be on pause … probably not.

If your DVD player has FW in and composite/S out, you should be able to run the signal through it.

Thanks alot. I’ll have the DVD player tonight and I’ll give it a try.
Also, I assume there is no wear on the camera if I use it in the reverse setup, that is to capture footage onto my computer from an anolog source, like a VHS player?

Hm. Never tried that. I think you have to actually record the analog signal to DV tape — it won’t do a pass-through that way. I could be wrong.

But as long as the tape transport on the camera isn’t running, there’s no wear and tear.

The DVD player + TV works for a preview monitor! Thanks
