So the company i work for has made the greatest decision of all time, baught a bunch of laptops for reporters and photos to use in the field, only one problem NO FIREWIRE, NO PCMCIA and NO EXPRESSCARD. so as you can see this can be quite the challenge since everything we shoot on uses ieee 1394 – 4pin. they also got us some great a/d converters… you know the dazzle. dazzle doesent work with vegas even to capture.

ive been told that there were some usb to firewire devices out there that would do the crossover but the company quit making them, and i havent been able to find a usb a/d converter thats solid and works with vegas, im looking for any help after spending a bunch of time on the web and havent found much im turning to the cow, can you point me in the right direction? we are using dvc pro and p2 currently. and we have made a plea to have all new laptops come with a firewire connector on them but as always, “they” know what we REALLY need.

NO FIREWIRE, NO PCMCIA and NO EXPRESSCARD

I don’t think there is a solution. I’m guessing the company the made that USB to Firewire device stopped making them because they didn’t work that well.

I didn’t even think they made a laptop without at least an express card slot. Even my little $299 Lenovo IdeaPad S10 NetBook has an express card slot! Also the Dazzle is an absolute amateur piece of junk so I can’t imagine the people buying this equipment know anything about video.

You might be better off telling them you found a device for $500 and buy another laptop with the money. 😉

Seriously, I think you need to bring to upper managements attention that these laptops are useless doorstops for video work and something needs to be done to replace them (and perhaps the person who bought them too)

    Good luck,

You could try Pinnacle Movie Box HD (although I cannot get them in Australia)

You could try contacting the supplier or eBAY.

In Australia, only medium to high end laptops have firewire, eSATA Xpresscard slots and USB 3 🙁

I did manage to recently pickup an ASUS N61JQ-ZBD-JX002V 16″ Notebook for AUD$1300 that had USB 3 and eSATA, but I did have to add on an XpreeCard for firewire for an extra AUD$69.

I know exactly how frustrated Jared is feeling. I work in IT and senior management occasionally makes purchases based purely on budget and expect us to integrate them into the environment.

I would be very weary of any Pinnacle hardware product. In my experience, they don’t work reliably and are proprietary to their software which means it might not work with Vegas. You should only buy one if you can return it if it doesn’t work.

Sorry to rais this somewhat old post but found it in googling on this same problem and not sure of something John says here.

    John (or other interested party),
The way you mention the express card above makes me wonder if the express card can have some role to play in capturing video or adding a firewire port.

I just posted about this a short while ago and then found this old post while googling some more.

My situation: No firewire on laptop
usb, eSata, HDMI and Express_card are all available.

I’ve been searching for a converter firewire to usb and beginning to see its not a very likely thing to find.

What can you tell me about Express card. I had understood it was a networking thing and didn’t even look into that angle.

[Harry Putnam] “What can you tell me about Express card. I had understood it was a networking thing and didn’t even look into that angle.”

An Express Card is the new PCMCIA format. It can be anything the manufacturer wants it to be as it’s just a bus. So it can hold a network card, firewire card, audio card, TV card, whatever.
