    Yes you can, although if you did a survey I think you’d find more people use FW than usb. Also, it entirely depends on what format you’re working in. For dv usb should be ok. Alot depends if your running mojo. The mojo needs it’s own firewire and its own bus which means you need to add a second FW card to use ext. FW drives.

    thanks a lot creatureteacher;
    yes I am using the Mojo, but I also have FW HD connected to the computer so I am actually digitizing to both FW and USB, the reason am asking is because I know that the speed is different, and I don

    I ran into a problem where I did not have enough spickets for my fire wire drives and used the USB port. I have the seagate external FW drives that has usb and FW on the back. Whatever you do DO NOT use the seagate 300G externals. There’s a known issue with the drive falling asleep when idle and really raises h-ll with AVID. Everyone has their favorite mfr. as long as you’re working in dv it “should ” be ok.

    If using USB2, it’s a good idea to switch from optimize for quick removal to optimize for speed. This prevents the USB2 lag down. You won’t be able to just unplug the drive, though. You’d need to click on the safe removal icon in the taskbar.
