    Hi

Firstly, I’ve had a look through past posts and haven’t been able to find an answer to my question.
    I’m using Vegas Pro 12 on a Samsung laptop with a i5 2.53GHz processor. I have 8gigs of RAM. I’m running Windows 7 64 bit.

My laptop only has USB2 connectors and I think this is where my problem lies…I can’t get HD video to playback smoothly except at low resolution.

And I’ve just noticed that when I try to play back at Best (Quarter) it automatically changes to Preview (Quarter).

I feel I need to upgrade to a new computer with USB3 ports. Will this help? I’d prefer to keep this computer if I could as it’s only a couple of years old and I don’t do nearly as much editing as I used to when I first started using Vegas 4.

I’ve seen a couple of posts that recommend using SATA drives in enclosures but I think my bottleneck is occurring with the USB2 cable.

    Looking forward to your thoughts

    Hi Peter,
I doubt it’s the USB unless you are running other usb drives and peripherals at the same time. Most likely your video card/memory/cpu combination. It may be better if you upgrade your internal drive to a larger, faster drive like SSD or a higher spec non-SSD. I upgraded my older laptop with a larger and faster Seagate Momentus drive. I then partitioned C, D, and E on the internal, with D holding the footage. I then render to an external drive or USB stick.

[Peter Heap] “I feel I need to upgrade to a new computer”

That new computer smell is always great.

On the subject of USB 3.0, my new work computer has that, and I am blown away at how fast my Samsung Extreme 64 GB thumb drive is on those USB 3.0 ports – I am hitting sustained 200 MByte/sec on reads, and in short bursts it can hit 400 MB/sec.

If you want to edit HD in an underpowered PC, then look at using Proxy editing. Search Help for “Proxy”, then read “Creating Proxy Files”.

“Most likely your video card/memory/cpu combination“.
    Also as Colin mentioned.
