URGENT!!!! UN-initialize a disk!

That’s exactly it, I had just bought a new FW drive to make a backup with. And I initialized the wrong one. A backup is no good if the operator hits the wrong button!

Well, first scan is no good. I did a search for “Deleted Files” – and it found some 60GB of files, but nothing that matched the original drive. I think it was looking at files that WERE on the drive and HAD been deleted. So now time for a thorough scan. Luckily this software doesn’t do anything to the drive but look at what’s on it. So nothing’s been altered in any way.
I was also looking around the net and Norton Utilities 7.0 (back in 2002) mentioned it could save an “accidentally intialized disc.” well that’s exactly what I did! But Norton Utilities doesn’t seem to exist anymore….

Just a heads up, I had to use Data Rescue II before and it can find lots of files but when they are recovered then they are just names numerically, because Data Rescue II cannot recover file names.
So even if it can find then you still have to manually rename all of the recovered files.

I had a drive failure last week (corrupted data and unmountable disk)
I tried that software your using and it took a long time and named all the files as you stated.
GET DISK WARRIOR NOW.
I cannot emphasize enough how great this program is.
It scanned the drive in minutes, found everything with names
intact and recovered them perfectly.its only 10 bucks more than the one your using now.

Verdict: complete loss
It recovered about 60% of the files. None of which retained their “long” names…. Also because this was Avid media (*.omf) it also didn’t know what *.omf files were, and couldn’t properly define them. Without the proper names, and without any *.omf files, all we had was a large collection of aiff files, some JPEGS, and some random other junk from the drive.
if it had all been QT media, I’m sure things would have gone better; however this was a last ditch effort for anyone. The program needs to understand the signature header of every file to know what it is. A QT file always starts with the same bits of info, just like an aiff, etc…
End of day, we’ve started digitizing from scratch. The simple things cause the biggest hurdle.

No, the drive is perfectly fine. I accidentally “initialized” it with Disk Utility. but I do love disk warrior!

I thought Disk Warrior could retrieve data from an initialized disk if you did it right away.

Disk Warrior rebuilds a damaged directory … but an initialized disc doesn’t have a damaged directory, it has a deleted one! Amongst other things Norton Utilities could take a periodic snapshot of your master directory … if you then accidentaly hosed your hard disc then you could scavenge the disc for these master directory snapshots and restore your directory structure using them. At present, I think only Micromat’s TechToolPro offers this.
