  • URGENT HELP NEEDED!!! problem with 5.7 Decklink drivers…..

Posted by Dave Sullivan on September 4, 2006 at 10:44 pm

    Hello All,

I’ve just installed the Decklink 5.7 drivers, and my entire system has crashed. I’ve got a job coming in the morning, a to be honest I’m stuffed if I can’t get my machine to work.
I downloaded the drivers, and installed them. the dialogue box then prompted me to restart my system, which I did. Upon restart I only get as far as the grey Apple screen. Abox then apperas and tells me, “You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button”.
I’ve tried this several times, and no joy, my system still won’t start. The last time I tried it my G5 fans were going so fast I thought it was going to lift off my desk and fly out of the room.
I’m using a Decklink HD card on a dual 2.5ghz G5 with 4 gb of RAM. I’m using 2 500gb external Firewire drives.
Has anyone else had a problem with the new drivers?.
Does anyone know how I can go into the system and remove the Decklink software, and restart my system?
Any help would be greatfully received.

    All the best

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

Try starting up while holding down to the shift key. This should disable the non system extensions.

If that does not work, remove the card before starting up, then uninstall the drivers using the “Uninstall Blackmagic” application.

    Hello Kristian,

Many thanks indeed for your help, I can now open up my G5 without any problems……all I need now is to be able to use my Decklink HD card!!
I’ve tried using the 5.6.2 drivers, but no joy. I can see the extended desktop in the display prefs, but I’m unable to display anything on my monitor. I’m using a JVC 21″ monitor, and connecting my Decklink HD card to it via the video in BNC connectors on the back. I’ve tried both channels A+B, but still no joy.
I’m using a dual 2.5ghz G5, 2 external firewire drives, the current version of OSX 10.4, the latest version of Quicktime, and I’ve got 4gb of RAM.
If I can see my extended desktop in the display prefs window, and if all of the decklink software has been installed correctly what can I do to be able to see video on my monitor?
Any help you can give would be grately received.
I’m off to bed now….its 1.24am in the UK, and to be honest I’ve had enough stress today trying to get my card working!!

    All the best

the JVC can take an SDI signal, right? You’re not trying to feed HD to a SD only monitor? You’re sure you have the right BNC on the Decklink card (they’re not labelled, so it’s guesswork until you find the out and in).

I had the same crash (G5 2.0 DP), after three crashes I tried starting while holding the command/apple key together with the V-key (for verbose startup mode) and funny enough the system made it passed the grey screen (maybe just luck?)

I downgraded to 5.6.2 anyway just to be sure…

    Hi guys,

Those of you with DeckLink HDs, stick to DeckLink v5.6.2 while we check this out.

Ive had this problem and have found that it has something to do with the VT Deck not being switched on at startup. If my deck is off I get a kernel panic – if it’s on all is well – if its disconnected all is well –

Maybe the card polls the deck on start up????

    Hi Dave,

You mentioned the DeckLink 5.6.2 drivers are indicating that you have the extended desktop in the Display Prefs but nothing shows on your monitor. Was this setup working before you tried to upgrade to DeckLink 5.7 drivers? If so, please uninstall whatever drivers you are running now and revert to the version you were running previously that worked. You can find archived drivers at Software Archives.

If you had not previously run the DeckLink HD card in your G5, or with your JVC monitor, then please check through the following possibilities:
    1. If there is “snow” on your monitor, then it would appear that you have connected the SDI output of DeckLink HD in to an analog input on the JVC monitor. Can you confirm that the JVC monitor will accept a digital SDI input?

    2. Go to the Dock, open the System Preferences and select Displays. Ensure that Show displays in menu bar is enabled.

Click on the Displays menu (near the top right of your computer monitor) and set Number of recent items to 10.

Now click on the Displays menu again and you should see all the resolutions of your DeckLink HD series card. Set the appropriate resolution and Hz rate for your broadcast monitor, eg 720 x 486 and 29 Hz for NTSC, or 720 x 576 and 25 Hz for PAL. Try these settings and any of the HD settings and see if any of them work. Please let me know if some do and some don’t and also let me know the model of monitor so I can check it’s specifications.

    3. If nothing seems to work, please launch Blackmagic Deck Control and ensure no cables are connected to the DeckLink HD card. The right side of Blackmagic Deck Control should show “No video input”. Now connect the monitoring output to the input of the card using a single SDI cable. Does the “No video input” message get replaced with a black image with no text? If so, then the card is definitely outputting a signal and it is more likely that the problem is with your monitor.
