POST FOR CREATIVE COW:
Upresing DVCAM to DVCPROHD?
I have some dv cam (DV) footage that i need to put into a High Def project. I want to take this to a post-house to get it upres’d but I’m not sure its worth it and if there is a difference between getting a post house to up the resolution (if its even doing that), or if i’m doing the same thing when i’m putting it into a high definition sequence within final cut pro..
Ideas anyone?

If the post house has a Terranex, that’s the best quality up-conversion you can get. If they are simply going to dub the tape from a DV deck to an HD deck and let the deck perform the upconvert, it might look better than you just scaling up in FCP.

If it is a small amount of DV, you can use Compressor. Because you have to set all the settings to FULL, it takes a while…but the results are pretty good.

Are they better than letting the Kona 3 card do it, or is this more a subjective thing?”With DV, you very often get the “jaggies” when upconverting through a Kona board. Just the nature of only starting out with 480 lines and not a whole lot of color information. A Terranex adds line doubling which really smooths out DV.
BetaSP, DigiBeta both upconvert very cleanly through a Kona board.

I’ll chime in here with a vote for Shane’s method, works well if you have a small amount (or time to render overnight) and the results have been very good so far.
I’ll also throw in another software suggestion – Digital Anarchy’s ReSizer. Just been using it on a doc (converting 4:3 archive to 16:9) and for the hell of it tried SD to HD. Surprisingly good.

I am using ReSizer to change DV 4:3 footage to 16:9 and I am not seeing much, if any, of a quality difference between just using Final Cut to blow the image up. I had heard that Final Cut 6 was really good at doing this and you did not need to buy third party plugins. Is this the case?

Are you judging this quality on a professional quality monitor via a capture card? If not, then you aren’t really seeing what the image looks like. FCP shows low res proxies.

I am. My real question is, is what I have heard about Final Cut’s new ability to upres without loss in quality and no longer needing third party plugins true?

Uprezing will ALWAYS result in a loss in quality. Any time you change from one format to another, you lose quality. FCPs upscaling engine is decent, but not the best…that is why the third party plugins exist…and the other hardware options as well. Even with the new version, you will get better results upscaling in After Effects and rendering, or capturing through a Kona 3, or having it dubbed at a post facility through a Terranex box. Or you can use Instant HD…or what I use a lot is Compressor, and make sure that the deinterlacing is set to the highest quality across the board.
ALL of those options beat FCP.
