I am planning to try and upload footage to an FTP site
for newsfeeds, as satellite costs are getting very expensive.

Will the TV stations accept the files? what format is best for them?
    what codec would I use?

We work in DVCAM 16:9 PAL & the clips would be say 10mins in length.

Does anyone have any experience with this that could help?

    Thanks very much.

Ask them. If you want to provide content to someone, you generally ask them what they accept.

Last time I looked into doing something like this, the major systems (DG Systems, etc.) were using a high bitrate MPEG-2 transport stream I believe (approx. 20Mb/s). But you had to buy their hardware ($10k), and pay fees for them to distribute the file. Not very cost effective for a smaller shop like me.

I would love to be able to deliver :30 spots to stations in an a tapeless way. I have the software to compress and upload the media to an FTP server. I could just send out a blanket email with a link to the file(s). Then they download when convenient. It seems to make sense, and would sure beat making 40 beta dubs, 40 sets of labels, 40 FedEx packs, blah, blah, blah…

As was mentioned, you should probably contact some of the potential recipients and see what they can use, or would prefer.
