  • Upgrading Video Card – recommendations ?

Posted by Greg Paterson on May 22, 2005 at 11:48 pm

    Hi,

My Leadtek A360 (Nvidia 5700) has gone belly-up.
A replacement is required so advice on a new card is sought.

A am looking to get something that best meets the requirements of C4D but is below $500.00.
Any suggestions on Brand, GPU, Memory.?

    Thanks

    Greg

I think the nVidia 6800 GT and Radeon x800 cards both perform well. The GT supports dual planes (only the active object is redrawn) while the x800 performs a little better overall.

Generally speaking Cinema seems to like performance oriented consumer cards, i.e., cards that are good for video games. Usually you won’t see any improvement–or possibly even worse performance–with professional-grade cards. Faster clock speeds generally mean faster performance, but Cinema doesn’t benefit that much from huge amounts of vram (so 128mb is probably as good as 256 in normal use). Have a look at Mash’s hardware guide and benchmarks; these are probably the best resources you’ll find: https://www.3dfluff.com/mash/stuff.htm
