  • Upgrading to 10.0.4 – Snow Leopard or Lion?

Posted by Jason Jenkins on April 25, 2012 at 6:37 pm

I’m thinking I’ll jump up to 10.0.4 before I start my next batch of projects. I’m running Snow Leopard right now. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to Lion at the same time? I do have a full clone of my system drive in it’s current state.

    Third.

You can bet that in the Apple X development labs, they’re not coding features and testing things for an older OS that’s been officially discontinued.

    Time to move along.

Is it worth the pain to do a clean install?

Or is it virtually the same thing to install over Snow Leopard?

Yeah, I’d love some sense from you guys too.

I’ve been avoiding the 1.04, MB and yes, Lion upgrade because we’re jammed with projects and systems seem to be going well.

I won’t deny I’m a bit timid about introducing any variables into the system now that it’s working smoothly.

Is there any sense that 1.04 (or X in general) is operating better in Lion?

Likewise Mark’s question, is the process simple and clean enough to do during, say, lunch…a long lunch….with cocktails?

I downloaded it from the App Store and installed it as wa over the top of Snow Leopard. I’ve never had an issue with FCPX, Motion, Compressor or Legacy.
Might say that’s a point for the App Store!

I’ve been on Lion for at least 6 months, so that’s off my radar any more.

IIRC, my upgrade from 10.0.2 to 10.0.3 was a bit of a mess. It took a whole day for my projects to settle down and start acting smooth again. I’ve always suspected that X had made changes to the database structure that had to be written across all my project files. Maybe the new plumbing for multi-cam or something? I don’t know.

The bump from 10.0.3 to 10.0.4 was a lot easier. After running the update, a close down and re-open and everything was pretty much fine. My active files didn’t seem to require much time to update and I can’t recall anything that went astray at all .

When I’ve opened older projects from backup – the software has indicated that those “old files” had to be updated to the new program – but it’s just been a few extra minutes on opening to convert. Nothing problematic at all.

Still, making safety backups before you upgrade will always and forever be the best practice.

    FWIW.
