  • Upgrading my AKG 568B shotgun mic

I have had my 568 for some time and used mainly for street interviews. It has worked well. The only downside is that I have found the sound quality quite a bit different from my other mics, AT4053 and 4051. So there is always the issue of trying to match the response.
Now a sound guy has offered me an AT 4073 in good condition and I’m wondering if this would be a better match and also a better mic than the 568.
Comparing specs, I see the AT mic is a lot more sensitive to handling noises and the roll off is higher.
Has anyone used both and can give me some greater insight?
Or maybe I should look elsewhere for a replacement. Budget is constrained….

Hello Rob and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Wow, an AKG 568b. I’ve never heard of one (and I’ve heard a lot of mics).

The AT4073 is very sensitive. This can be a very good thing for nature videography, but horrible if you’re shooting around a high noise environment.

    Have you tried your 4053?

My Schoeps cmc641 works very nicely outside. It’s a similar configuration, just a lot smoother.

Maybe try the 4053 to see what you can get out of it before spending the money on the 4073.

Hi Ty, thanks for the comment. TBH I have tried the 4053 instead of the AKG and been pleasantly surprised in situations i wouldn’t have expected good results. Maybe I should just save up for a 416 instead….

I find I use my Schoeps cmc641 super cardioid a lot more than my 416, 816 or NTG8.

If you haven’t heard one of those, you should try one.
