  • Upgrading from Vegas 20 to Vegas 23

    Hello, all.

Long-time Vegas Pro user since 2011. I’m nearing the end of a long 4 year journey on a three hour feature film. We began shooting in the summer of 2022, had reshoots in 2024, and release is planned for January 2027.

I got the e-mail offer for a $99 upgrade to Vegas 23; which is obviously a no-brainer. I’ve been using Vegas 20 since filming wrapped three years ago, and I just wanted to ask everyone what I can expect going into Vegas 23; given the nature of my project. I know common sense says stability will improve. I’m sure there will be less crashes, something that happens semi-frequently in Vegas 20 (although luckily the kind that freeze the preview screen and always give me a chance to save before disaster strikes, so it’s been manageable).

tl;dr – what specific improvements or tools can I expect as a filmmaker upgrading from Vegas 20 to Vegas 23?

Boy, Zach, you sound exactly like me! SVP since 2011, and now with VP20.

It’s “stable enough” for the most part, but I’m curious about VP23 as well.

    Hey Zach,

I’ve purchased the Vegas Pro latest upgrade.

But from bitter recent experience in Adobe land on a feature film, do under NO circumstances this close to the finishing line, upgrade project to a new version. Unless you can roll back.

I know that it is tempting, but in my case it was a combination of issues, and not least that Adobe, like the rest of the NLE software crowd, are desperate to include A.I. functionality. Which in some cases will mess with your computing power and attach useless files to your project, suce as A.I. search. I would expect same happening in Vegas.

My situation had a number of unknown variables involved + Adobe conflicts with NVidia board, and NVidia and Microsoft battling it out. The main issue was that Adobe’s latest PPro version (in general) is never fully tested for long-form professional work, and their support are as useless as a chocolate teapot. There is a whole long list. But in general, same apply to most NLE software releases that are increasing their reliance on including new features and major steps like A.I.

In any case, as I am sure that you are already doing, put all of your known good project and project files on an external frive, and have that locked away in in a cypboard. So you can always roll back to a good know point in time.

    Just an opinion.

PS: Looking forward to seeing your finished project, please do come back and share.

Yes those words from Mads are true. Just wait and finish the project. Ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. There would be no one to put it back together again except you and… well trust me, don’t do it now. 4 years is a very long time and a LOT of work.

For me, stability has improved in every recent version. Version 23 for me is more stable than version 22. Yes, some people will have problems with any version. However, the only way to know if it’s more stable for the work YOU do is to install it and test it. For me, version 23 has been very stable and it’s the only version I use for production work at this time.
