  • Upgrading from 32 to 64-bit

Posted by Bill Mash on October 31, 2010 at 12:52 am

HD Vegas + HD with Boris FX and After Affects has pushed my system to the limit.

My processor supports 64-bit and up to 4GB of Ram. I’m considering upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit and doubling my memory to 4GB. Anyone else crossed this bridge? Anyone running Vegas-10 with a similar configuration and/or plugins?

    Thx

    System
    OS:Windows XP 32-bit
OS Drive:7,200 rpm raid 0 scsi 250gb (mirror)
    Edit Drives: G-Drive Mini, G-Drive Raid 0
    MB:Pentium Dual Core 3.2 GHZ (64-bit capable)
    MEM:2GB Ram
    Display:Radeon X1300 Series

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Dual Core that I used before I bought my QuadCore and my daughter is using it now for video editing. We upgraded it with Windows 7 and 4GB of memory but she is still having problems playing back HD footage that my QuadCore plays back with ease.

You really should consider getting a new QuadCore. Adding a new OS to an old DualCore is not going to give you the boost you’re looking for. It will help, but it’s still old hardware by today’s standards and the new Core i7 outperforms my older QuadCore by a fair margin.

I see you also have an ATI video card which is not support by Vegas or After Effects. It looks like it’s time to upgrade your hardware if you are serious about having a productive HD workflow. (just my humble opinion)

I was actually at Frys getting HW when you replied:-)

I’m going conservative at this point replacing my mainstream ATI video card with a mainstream NIVIDIA card. The file below is positively fascinating to see the progression in five-years!

Have to go back and get more memory as they gave me the WRONG DIMMS.

    Cheers

    Hi John,

Do you have your new system posted on your web site so we all can see what we need for HD.

    Thanks,

My “new system” is now a very old QuadCore but it’s been posted to my web site for several years. You can find it on the PC Equipment page. My next system will probably be built around an Intel Core i7-980X 6 core.

My new build Phenom X6 should be about a 60% performance boost over the Q6700, can’t wait as my REALLY ancient dual core Pentium is sad, LOL.
