Upgrading from 10.3.9

Yes, just buy a ‘Tiger’ DVD from a store or online.

You have 3 options when upgrading:

1) Simple: It updates the OS around your data. Fast, easy.

2) Archive and Install: Takes your system info, saves it, then erases everything else and puts Tiger on the hard drive. You import the settings you want to keep later from where they were all saved. (I think you have to back up your actual data files yourself, however.)

3) Erase and Install: Wipes the drive clean, puts Tiger on it. ALL of your data and settings are gone.

Option #1 is easiest, option #3 will give you the safest, most stable system. A lot of people say to just go with #3, but honestly, you should probably give #1 a try. Back up all your data somewhere first and give it a shot. If you start having trouble you can always go back and do #3 later. No harm in at least TRYING the easy way first.

Actually, I’m not totally joking…doing this kind of work involves a lot of clicking “ok” 3 or 4 times then waiting 10 minutes while files copy off a disc. A sporting event with small breaks every few minutes is actually the perfect companion for a reinstall.

Does 10.4 have the migration utility where you can back up all your stuff to a firewire drive and then do a clean install but select the option to have the utility move all your old stuff to the new computer? It worked for me when I upgraded to 10.3.
