    Good morning
I am about to hock my first born and go to Dell and order the fattest machine I can get…If “you” had an unlimited budget and no sense, what would you buy??? My eyes went wide when I saw they could put 2 quad Xeon’s in one machine…4gb of ram…their best video card and I have exceeded the value of number one son…My video work is picking up but I am struggling with system crash’s and long rendering times…I have invested lots in some camera stuff…which may explain why I am now single…but now my focus is my processing machine…I have followed your forum for some time and respect the value of information that is generated from here…
    What do the experts think????
This will be my “only” relationship for a couple three years so I would like a system that can go the distance

That system should create enough warmth to keep you warm at night.:>)

How many systems do you want/need? What type of internal and external storage devices do you need? What type of I/O and display devices do you need? With the continuous battle between Intel and AMD, processor speed and cost just keep getting better. Intel proc prices recently dropped by half.
Dual Quadcores? We build our own, and eight grand will get you a great workstation be it assembled from primo parts or off the serious shelf!

I am talking one system…stand alone workstation on a network with storage. I have been advised to use a SAS raid array and dedicate this machine to crunch data…storage external…Although I have assembled a computer for my son to play on my knowledge tends to evaporate quickly when problems arise…Vegas and Adobe are my tools…recent projects in HDV have hammered my current system and limited my ability to take on larger projects…I am a 4yr novice to the sport but have exposure to the real deel of filmaking…if they strike next fall I may need this to support myself entirely…currently I record bits and pieces of various tests to be shown to the creative people and they pay me…they have their display stuff covered…Dual Quad Core Xeon’s or AMD’s?…4gb of storage or 10?…dual monitors and a HD screen?….I am medium level user…chief cook and bottle washer…
Thanks John, I appreciate your professional level and the time you give to my response.

My suggestion would be to build your own – not all that difficult. Go to New-Egg – you’ll end up with 20-40% more computer compared to a Dell priced work-station.

HDV hammers any computer, btw. It’s best to convert Mpeg2 footage to an editing codec no matter what system you are using.

    Hi Teecee,

I’m not here to advertise for anyone, but my first and last computer was a Dell and I’m tired of getting tech support from another country. I tried this company in Denver called tasty computer and talked to Russell the owner. Check out the web site https://tastycomputers.com/
So far I’m happy with the product.

    Good Luck!

I would go for the Dell Precision 490 and a 30″ Dell LCD. Get the Quadro 1500 or 3500 video card. We just set one up for our series with Dual Core Duo Xeons – very fast!

Plus it’s an Avid Adrenaline approved box so it has been through a fair amount of high-end video testing. You won’t get the same quality build from your local PC builder – they’re great for gaming but NOT for pro video!
