  • Upgraded to CS5- now “motion effects” not working on mp4 files

Posted by John Young on May 10, 2011 at 3:17 pm

I have just upgraded from CS3 to CS5.5. I have a sequence that was working fine in CS3, that I now have opened in CS5. The Motion Effects animations (scale and position)are not working on all my mp4 clips (from Sony EX1, XDCAM codec). I have the same sort of effect on mov files (Avid DNxHD codec) files that work just fine.

What is strange is that I can get the scale to change. For instance, I can change the scale to 67%, but if I want to animate keyframes that animates the scale of the clip from 67% and then zooms in to 100% it does not work and the clip simply stays at 67%.

If I put this same mp4 clip into a sequence and then nest that sequence into my original sequence, I can animate scale keyframes normally with the effects applied to the nested sequence.

    Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

In CS5.5 with a new project with the same clips fresly imported (not the CS3 project) do they still give you issues?

    Thanks Ann.

No. I opened a new cs5 project and could not recreate the problem I was having with the imported cs3 project.

But I found out a little more too. The reason that it would not apply scale keyframes correctly had something to do with the fact that the clip also had Time Remapping applied to it. I don’t know why, but when I removed the Time Remapping, the Scale animation worked as it should.

My workaround was to nest the Time Remapped clip into a sequence, and apply the Scale animation to that nest sequence. It worked, but I still have no idea why there was a problem in the first place.

This happened to me as well with cs5.5, but not upgrading from a previous version. I don’t know why, but the effect controls showed the animation happening correctly but didn’t show in the preview screen. I tried the nesting trick and it worked (I nested the clip and applied the effects to the nest shell). I didn’t have a speed change on the clip, so I don’t know why it couldn’t process the motion and position animations changes I added. Thanks for the tip!
