Upgraded my PC, got slower render times
Recently I upgraded a few components in my PC. I went from a HD 5850 to a HD 7950, added 12gb of ram (16 total, up from 4), and got a SSD to put my OS on. My processor is an AMD 965.
Whenever I render in Sony Vegas 12, it’s taking about 40 minutes to render 20 minutes of video. Under the old config, it was about 18 minutes for a 20 minute video. 40 minutes is what it would take when using processor only, so I’m not sure if the 7950 isn’t supported or what. When I have it check my GPU it says that Open CL is available, and I’ve checked several times that it’s enabled in the render options. I’ve tried rendering to both my old magnetic drive and the SSD and the speeds are the same.
All the footage is coming in as MP4 and going out as MP4 so there’s no conversion going on. Any advice?

I have seen systems that performed poorly because old drivers were somehow conflicting with new/updated drivers. There are utilities that completely remove old drivers, allowing you a perfect, clean hardware/driver install. Here is a link that might fix your problem (but you’ll have to install the latest drivers when you’re done with it):

not taking anything away from driver sweeper but that software was designed when Nvidia/AMD drivers were not mature enough… for years now we have drivers installation modules that clean the system, including registry keys, from the old drivers before updating while keeping user preferences and profiles (in modern Operating Systems such as Windows 7 SP1 – Windows 8)… funny thing that using driver sweeper could conflict with the proprietary “sweeper” of your GPU manufacturer. Just my two cents and maybe wrong opinion !

I forgot to ask for a GPU-Z (freeware VGA monitoring tool) screenshot of the GPU usage during the rendering process, this will tell whether the new card is being used properly or not and I’ll try to help you from there. Theoretically your rendering times should be quite faster, but never slower, it could be a conflict in the memory upgrade, different RAM latencies maybe ?
